If there’s one trait that makes Bombay what it is, its prime cosmopolitanism and all its offshoots. There are just some things that are distinctly evocative of this city, things that just set off ideas and images about the nature of being here, and Bombay’s heritage architecture is one of those things. Art Deco — the architectural aesthetic that makes Bombay’s heritage architecture famous, came from a global zeitgeist shift. Post WW1, people wanted their built environment to reflect beauty but with limited resources, and art deco with the newly introduced RCC as a material made things possible. If the first, second, and third waves of coffee hadn’t culminated globally, and a global shift in perception towards an appreciation craft baking hadn’t manifested itself, the chances of our being here would be precarious. And how we love art deco, thanks to STaND Design and our proximity to Bombay’s nexus of art deco architecture, we had the Craftery’s outer facade and internal design ethos inspired by it. But there’s a lot, lot more to the Bombay built environment.

Enter, Walkitecture. They’re the folks pushing forward a greater appreciation for Mumbai's most historic neighbourhoods. Walkitecture is a set of curated walking & cycling tours for tourists & architecture enthusiasts in Mumbai. This edition looks at Kalaghoda, also known in the past as 'Frere Town' and Oval Maidan, a UNESCO World Heritage site. They’ve been conducting walkthrough tours in these districts to find an undiscovered treasure trove of architectural styles, legends and myths. It is through them that an array of eclectic architectural styles, from Gothic, Neo-classical, Indo-Saracenic to Art-Deco and many more are made more visible on Bombay’s streetscape.

As many of you are aware, we've planted flags in the Colaba/Fort districts through our Subko mini at Abode Bombay. Being all about community affairs, when Abode joined hands to facilitate the Walkitecture tour, we chimed in as well. Abode x Walkitecture x Specialty Coffee x Craft Bakes.
