Subko SOS 07: Specialty Liberica from the subcontinent with Pranoy Thipaiah

Time for another SOS and in this edition we are venturing into the world of specialty Liberica beans, from the subcontinent. We are honoured to have this event guided by Pranoy Thipaiah of Kerehaklu, Chikmagalur, Karnataka. Pranoy is going to narrate stories that go behind the artistry of Liberica - referred to as ‘Mara Kaapi’ which loosely translates to ‘tree coffee' because of its height. Pranoy shared with us that Liberica plants at Kerehaklu can average around 15 feet in height.

Liberica originates from the East African country of Liberia. It was traditionally planted by British colonists along coffee plantation hedges to serve as pest resistant barriers for robusta and arabica crops. Liberica currently accounts for only 2% of the world’s coffee production- so it’s exceedingly rare in consumable processed form.

Pranoy is also showcasing Koji fermented natural processed Liberica, for us to witness the liberation of its essence, as it reveals its true form, venturing beyond the traditional perception.

Brewing, tasting, conversations, coffee - from the subcontinent, for all.
Specialty Liberica Revolution? We’re all in for it.
